METEORITES

A large range of natural as well as cut and polished slices of the famed Gibeon Meteorite are available.

HISTORY

The Gibeon Meteorite was first reported by Captain J.E.Alexander in 1838. Local natives reported large chunks of iron up to 2 feet square on the east side of the Great Fish River in what is now Gibeon Namibia-South West Africa. a 232 Kg mass was recovered in 1857 as was numerous other masses between 100 and 500 Kg. With modern metal detectors meteorites as small a 3 mm across are now being located. Some of these small pieces show the Octahedral Crystal in great detail.

ESTIMATED TIME OF COLLISION

This meteorite impacted Earth approximately 30,000 years ago in Great Namaguland Namibia S.W Africa. The structural class is of Fine Octahedrite illustrating ClassicWidmanstatten Pattern exposed on etched polished surfaces. Evidence of secondary melting and cooling caused by atmospheric friction can be seen on the outside surface of the specimens. Some of the larger meteorites (30 kg size) show a sculpted  type surface. The outside colour is a rust brown to black.
